Last week we presented the DiDIY project, its task, and what we are currently doing, at the Paris Open Source Summit, in the fossA (Free/Open Source Software in Academia) sub-event. More in detail, we briefly introduced, through these slides:
FarmBot is an open-source CNC farming machine and software package designed for small-scale precision food production. Similar to 3D printers and CNC milling machines, FarmBot hardware employs linear guides in the X, Y, and Z directions. This allows for tooling such as seed injectors, watering nozzles, sensors, and weed removal tools to be precisely positioned and used on the plants and soil.
FarmBot is controlled by an Arduino/RAMPS stack and an internet connected Raspberry Pi 2. The hardware is designed to be simple, scalable, hackable, and easily produced.
The goal of the DiDIY Project is to study the Digital Do-It-Yourself (Digital DIY or DiDIY) phenomenon, that is Do-It-Yourself design, manufacturing and usage of physical objects (but also music, and other non-material creative works) that is only possible thanks to computers, computer-controlled tools (e.g.
Young aspiring entrepreneurs from East Africa developed ICT applications targeting agriculture. The winners and some best participants are currently being incubated and coached in partner ICT innovation centers to fine-tune their products, their business strategies and prepare the roll-out of the applications.
